Support for academics, trainers and students

By March 2010 the Eurocodes will be mandatory for European public works and likely to become the de-facto standard for the private sector – both in Europe and world-wide. They will also provide the framework for standards used in assessing structural products for their essential CE marking.

As such it is vital for all existing and future civil and structural engineering students and trainees to be taught Eurocode design principles during their tertiary education and initial professional development.

In November 2006 IStructE set up a study group called ‘Teaching of Eurocodes in universities’ open to all those teaching Eurocodes in universities and colleges, including non-members of IStructE. Its main purposes are to monitor design teaching to Eurocodes in universities, share experiences, discuss issues, pass on successful practice, compile a list of available teaching resources, promote development and sharing of teaching resources, and assist BSI with revision of its Guide to the structural Eurocodes for students of structural design.

While the support resources on this website are primarily aimed at practicising design engineers, many are also useful to academics, trainers, graduates and students.  In particular, there have been a number of Eurocode vocational training research projects funded by the EU Leonardo da Vinci programme over the past few years which have resulted in free online training and learning aids for the steel, concrete and composite Eurocodes. These include

The ICE, IStructE and various UK structural materials associations have also offer a wide range of free or low-cost entry-level design guides, worked examples and seminars, all of which are linked from this site.
